Wine
Seminar: Howell Mountain AVA & Guided Tasting
by Marc Cohen MD: proprietor of Howell
at the Moon Wines, Napa CA.
When
the fog rolls off the ocean and into the Napa Valley, the weather
on Howell Mountain is generally sunny and cool. The appellation
owes its distinctive climate to the fact that it is positioned well
above the valley
floor. Because of its altitude, generally, evening temperatures
are warmer and daytime temperatures are much cooler—leveling
out spikes in heat that tend to be more exaggerated at lower elevations.
Although it gets nearly twice as much rainfall as the valley below,
the soil tends to be dry, because rocky, porous soil conditions
allow for adequate drainage and less accumulation. Seasonally, cooler
spring temperatures cause buds to break later than average, and
warm summer nights produce fruit that demonstrates a great balance
between acidity and sugar. All of which, translates into a rich
diversity of complexity and flavor in your glass.
4-5:00
pm
Wine Seminar: Banfi Wines by Sharron McCarthy,
CSW, Banfi Vintners Wine Education
Join
us on a "Romp through the Vineyards of Castello
Banfi in Italy". Located in the Brunello di Montalcino
zone of Tuscany, Castello Banfi's (founded by the Mariani family
in 1978) dedication to excellence in the art of winemaking has been
recognized the world over. Perhaps most gratifying is the praise
of neighboring vintners who acknowledge Banfi's role in pioneering
a new era in Brunello and bringing the wine world's attention to
Montalcino.
We
invite you to taste some exquisite gems from Castello Banfi including
the seductive Brunello di Montalcino, sexy Super Tuscan SummuS and
the sensuous Rosa Regale from another of the Mariani family estates
in Piedmont!
